I can’t believe the summer is almost over and fall is just around the corner. That means CDT 2023 has been released and it is time to review and update the codes for implementation on January 1, 2023.

There are 22 new codes, 12 revisions and 2 deletions. Below are some of the highlights that will impact OMS offices:

In the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Chapter of the CDT code book, Current Dental Terminology 2023 ©American Dental Association, there are 3 new codes and 1 revision. 

New codes:

D7956 – guided tissue regeneration, edentulous area – resorbable barrier, per site.

D7957 - guided tissue regeneration, edentulous area – non-resorbable barrier, per site.

D7509 – marsupialization of odontogenic cyst – Surgical decompression of a large cystic lesion by creating a long-term open pocket or pouch.

Revised code: 

D7251 – coronectomy-intentional partial tooth removal, impacted teeth only – Intentional partial tooth removal is performed when a neurovascular complication is likely if the entire impacted tooth is removed. 

Along with the codes mentioned above here are some additional new codes that may impact your office:

D6105 – removal of implant body not requiring bone removal or flap elevation.

D6106 - guided tissue regeneration – resorbable barrier, per implant.

D6107 - guided tissue regeneration – non-resorbable barrier, per implant.

There are numerous other new and revised codes that may be of interest to OMS offices as well. Be sure to check out the following for more details:

• 3D dental imaging as well as tomosynthesis
• Removal of resorbable membrane (D4286)
• Reline to a custom sleep apnea appliance (indirect)
• Covid-19 vaccination codes describing brand name and dosages. You may be familiar with these as they were added for use in the Spring of 2022. 

Remember to review the CDT 2023 thoroughly making updates to your software, router slips and “cheat sheets” with the new codes as of January 1, 2023. Take time to reach out to the carriers to inquire if they have fees and specific policies in place.
