Dear Patient,
It is that time of year again! 2021 is almost in the rearview mirror. That means the CDT book, Current Dental Terminology 2022 ©American Dental Association has been released and the revised, new and deleted codes are ready for review with implementation slated for January 1, 2022.
There are 16 additions, 14 revisions, 6 deletions and 10 editorial updates in all. In the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery chapter of the CDT book, there are 3 revisions and 3 new codes.
It was determined by the CMC that revisions as well as additions should be made to reflect the separate nature of previously combined procedures. Here are some of the highlights that will impact OMS offices:
Revised CDT codes:
D7292 - placement of temporary anchorage device [screw retained plate], requiring flap; includes device removal
D7293 – placement of temporary anchorage device requiring flap; includes device removal
D7294 – placement of temporary anchorage device without flap; includes device removal
New CDT codes:
D7298 – removal of temporary anchorage device [screw retained plate], requiring flap
D7299 – removal of temporary anchorage device, requiring flap
D7300 – removal of temporary anchorage device without flap
D6198 – remove interim implant component - (e.g., interim abutment, provisional implant crown). Be sure to check out the codebook for a complete description as well as revisions to D6012, D6051 and D6100. The revisions here also make clear that placement and/or removal are separate procedures and there needs to be a way to report that.
D9912 – pre-visit patient screening
Capture and documentation of a patient’s health status to evaluate risk of infectious disease transmission prior to patient visit… (check out the entire description in CDT 2022).
The following codes may excite some of you! We have waited a long time for sleep apnea codes and now we have some!
D9947 – custom sleep apnea appliance fabrication and placement
D9948 – adjustment of custom sleep apnea appliance
D9949 – repair of custom sleep apnea appliance
The Covid Vaccination Codes were approved in March of this year. Please review CDT for the full description. You may also want to check out the ADA Guide to CDT’s COVID-19 Vaccination Procedure Codes. It can be found on the ADA’s Website linked

Make sure to review the codes in CDT 2022 thoroughly and make updates to your software, router slips and “cheat sheets” with the new codes as of January 1, 2022. Be sure to also reach out to the carriers to see if they have fees and policies in place for these codes as well.
Until next time…Keep Calm and Code On!
